About Occupational Therapy

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapists help people of all ages participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). Occupational therapists work with people with disabilities to participate fully in social and school environments, providing supports for older adults experiencing cognitive and physical changes, and helping people recovering from injury to regain skills. Occupational therapy services include comprehensive evaluations of homes and other environments including schools and workplaces, recommendations for adaptive devices  and education and guidance for clients and their families.

How Occupational Therapists help?

  • Help to overcome a disability by educating and coaching clients how to improve or maintain abilities you already have

  • Adaptive devices you already use around the house or at work

  • Recommend changes to your environment where you do activities

  • Occupational therapists use a client-centered approach to help overcome barriers with performance and improve quality of life

  • Occupational therapists may assess your physical and mental abilities, social and emotional supports to help you succeed your goals

Occupational Therapy with Adults

Much of what defines successful or active ageing fits perfectly within the philosophy of occupational therapy; that is, the 'doing' to enable health and wellbeing. For occupational therapists, this means working well with adults aiming to prevent ill health and disability.
