Do you want to live at home as you grow older? Do you have concerns about friends and family that are living alone?
As we age, our abilities diminish which is part of the normal ageing process. Occupational therapists work with adults to maintain their independence and age safely at home. Occupational therapists work with their client's specific needs, skills, environment and budget to help maintain independence.
Occupational therapists provide an evaluation in your home and make recommendations that meet your needs and reassure your family members. Occupational therapists consider all options to help you get around in the community. Options include completing a driving evaluation with the goal of addressing difficult areas so you can drive safely, providing non-driving alternatives for you to get around the community, supporting you to become comfortable with public transportation systems. Occupational therapists observe you as you do the things you want and need to do. They recommend modifications to increase safety now and in the future. Recommendations may include adding adaptive devices such as stairlifts or grab bars, modifying counter heights to accommodate wheelchairs, adding railings, widening doorways, etc.
If you are interested in working with an occupational therapist to help maintain your independence, ask your physician for a referral.
